Our approach to local social and economic investment
Our company values underpin all that we do. And we build on these in our activities across the UK by striving to be a good neighbour. Renewables offer a myriad of benefits at a national and global scale, reducing the impact of climate change and improving energy security, but they also provide fantastic social and economic benefits at a local scale that have a real impact.
Our wind, solar and grid stability projects generate valuable funds for the communities where they’re sited.
Statkraft’s operational projects across the UK have delivered over £5 million to local communities. How the funds are allocated are decided by a panel of local representatives, to ensure they reflect the needs and priorities in that community.

We are open to exploring local investment opportunities in our wind and solar projects, and work with third party specialists, such as Local Energy Scotland, to offer advice to communities as the project develops.
We take opportunities to enhance the local community during the design phase of our projects, such as funding broadband feasibility studies to improve digital connectivity, seeking to incorporate and improve land access, and collaborating with local wildlife groups.
We commission trusted experts in planning, digital media, accessibility and the environment who can engage directly with communities, creating plans that unblock local challenges and deliver real benefits.
Through our market activities and renewable energy projects we create value for the UK by paying tax, used by both central and local governments. The UK tax contributions made by Statkraft in the 2022 financial year was in excess of £9.5 million. à Read more on UK tax policy.
We are pleased to support a variety of national and local events that bring together communities, such as Highland Games, the Capel Bangor Show, Rheidol Football Club, and our own community event on the grounds of our hydro power plant in Aberystwyth.
We encourage local businesses to be involved in the construction and operation of our projects by working with local business groups, who help raise awareness of the employment opportunities available.
The energy industry is growing at pace. We’re committed to understanding what this demand looks like, and developing a UK workforce needed to meet it, through initiatives such as partnerships with education providers, career workshops and work experience for new graduates.

Addressing the biodiversity crisis
By providing an alternative to oil and gas, renewable projects can combat the climate crisis. But our projects are also designed to tackle the biodiversity crisis.
With over 1 million species at threat of extinction, Statkraft’s dedicated in-house ecology team considers the landscape and species at a site, guiding the design of our projects in order help those species flourish and minimise ecological impacts. Whether it’s peatland restoration, woodland planting or building bug hotels, our restoration measures are tailored to that specific site and it’s biodiversity needs. Robust monitoring helps us understand whether these measures are successful, or whether further intervention is needed.
Partnerships with experts are core to this process. By working together, we can deliver clean, green, renewable energy whilst providing greater ecological value and benefits to the surrounding site.

Buglife
Invertebrates, make up seven of every ten species on the planet and are vital to human life, from creating nutrient rich soil to providing essential pollination services. Statkraft is a corporate partner of Buglife to promote the recognition of the importance of invertebrates.
Our aim is that all environmental plans at our wind projects are reviewed and approved by Buglife to ensure Statkraft maximises opportunities to provide bespoke habitat management measures that will increase invertebrate populations.

Bumblebee Conservation Trust
Bumblebees are key pollinators of a huge variety of flowers and crops, playing a crucial role in pollination services that support food production and healthy ecosystems. In the last 100 years bumblebee populations have crashed. This decline poses a serious threat to biodiversity and agricultural productivity.
As a Business Member of the Bumblebee Conservation Trust, Statkraft supports their conservation activities by collaborating on habitat, ground preparation techniques and plant species selection at our sites that contribute positively to bumblebee conservation.

Rare Breeds Survival Trust
We support diversity in farming through our partnership with Rare Breeds Survival Trust, who fight for a healthier and more diverse natural environment by ensuring that native and rare breeds of farmed animals such as sheep, cattle and pigs survive and thrive. Perfectly adapted to our landscapes, they can help degraded habitats and improve our soils. Our support recognises the importance of farming traditions, demonstrating how new and old can work together.

HabitatAid
We are proud to work with HabitatAid, who promote and sell British native seeds and plants, sourced from a community of specialist UK nurseries and growers. We benefit from their expert guidance as we design solar farms where plant life can thrive.
Other partnerships and accreditations
SolarAid helps to provide access to clean energy for the most vulnerable communities across Africa, tackling both climate change and poverty. SolarAid was originally founded by Solarcentury in 2006, who were later acquired by Statkraft. Statkraft has continued to support the charity since then.
Highland Renewables is a network of businesses collaborating to maximise the local benefits of the green revolution in the Highlands. Established in 2021, the partnership seeks to ensure that all who live, work, visit, study, and invest in the Highlands benefit from this unique moment in our region’s history.
