Largest operational BESS scheme in Great Britain – supported by Statkraft – now live
Statkraft signed a significant PPA with Statera Energy in 2023 to provide market-leading optimisation for the scheme
The largest operational battery energy storage system (BESS) built so far in Great Britain is now live and delivering clean power to the electricity grid, with support from Statkraft, a leading provider of market access and optimisation services. The delivery of this important project marks a key milestone in the energy transition.
Thurrock Storage, a 300MW / 600MWh BESS scheme by Statera Energy, a market leader in battery storage, is strategically located at Tilbury in Essex, and is capable of powering 680,000 homes for up to two hours. Statkraft signed a significant PPA with Statera Energy in 2023 to provide market-leading optimisation for the scheme, along with an innovative revenue floor structure to support the project’s financing.

Statkraft’s London-based origination team are the leading long-term traders in energy transition trading in the UK, with over 4GW of long-term renewable PPAs and 3.5GW of flexible assets such as batteries and flexible generation under contract, almost all of which is third party.
Statkraft’s proprietary technologies enable asset optimisation tailored to each asset's characteristics and the owner's appetite for risk and deliver a robust cross-market optimisation with extensive transparency and benchmarking for distributed assets in order to maximise revenues within agreed parameters. The portfolio continues to see rapid growth in Great Britain and Statkraft is expanding this activity in several European markets.

I particularly want to recognise the Statera teams for their dedication and professionalism in turning this ambitious vision come into reality. I’m pleased to build on our strong partnership with Statera, and we look forward to continuing to work together to optimise their assets in the years ahead.”
Lewis Elder, Statera’s Director of Commercial Operations & Policy, said: “We are delighted that Thurrock Storage has now entered commercial operations. Thanks to our close collaboration with Statkraft, the site is fully onboarded and active in the market. Statkraft’s team has been highly reliable and supportive throughout commissioning, and we look forward to continuing our work together to optimise the asset and maximise its value going forward.”
