Statkraft pledges over £130,000 to deliver primary school science workshops
Edinburgh Science Foundation will deliver over 150 workshops to schools in Scotland
Statkraft, Europe’s largest generator of renewable energy, has announced a new partnership with Edinburgh Science Foundation, an educational charity that aims to inspire, encourage and challenge people of all ages and backgrounds to explore and understand the world around them.
Statkraft has committed to delivering engaging science workshops to primary schools near all of their onshore wind projects in Scotland. These will focus on sustainability and energy-making, which aims to spark an early interest in science, technology, engineering and mathematics (STEM) subjects from primary school pupils.
Statkraft has also made a commitment to an annual Skills Fund for future wind farms, to support those living near the project once operational. This £10,000 per year fund (index linked to CPI), could be used by members of the local community to support learning, activities and equipment to develop their skills and knowledge in STEM.
Alison Hood, Statkraft’s Head of Engagement and Social Value, said: “The energy industry requires significant growth across all regions of the UK, and initiatives such as this partnership are just one way to attract the future energy workforce needed. These workshops will help the next generation to better understand the world around them and hopefully inspire a career in the renewable sector.”
Hassun El-Zafar, Director and CEO of Edinburgh Science, said: "We’re thrilled to have the support of Statkraft in bringing our Generation Science workshops to primary schools across Scotland. This partnership represents a significant investment in our children’s future - helping them understand the role of renewable energy in meeting our energy needs, while making STEM education both accessible and inspiring."
