Statkraft scholarship: Merlin’s journey
In 2023, Statkraft launched the University of Highlands & Islands scholarship fund, designed to support STEM students who might otherwise be unable to access tertiary education.
We are delighted to feature a guest blog from Merlin Farrell, one of the first students to join the scheme, as his time at UHI draws to a close.

I first heard about the Statkraft scholarship award through UHI, who contacted me before I started higher education at the Scottish Association for Marine Science (SAMS). Soon after receiving the award, I have had ongoing support from staff at Statkraft, helping me make the most of my time at university and preparing me for my career afterwards. The funds have supported me throughout, enabling me to do additional courses and focus on my professional development.

While the funds have led me to do much more with my education, the people and the connections I’ve made through this scholarship, I feel, have been just as or even more valuable. I’ve been introduced to a fantastic team, conducted interviews and learnt how the industry is focused on sustainable development through investment in biodiversity, people, and communities.
Travelling to Egypt for two weeks and researching coral reefs, mangroves and seagrass meadows was made possible through the award – working with pioneering scientists in the field was a once-in-a-lifetime experience. Another highlight of each year is the All-Energy conference in Glasgow, where the team are always welcoming and help me connect with other leading industry organisations. Conferences can feel quite overwhelming, especially if you’re not familiar with them, and Statkraft has helped me build my confidence in networking, and now I get excited to speak to exhibitors. This confidence has helped me build my own small business in yachting, which is giving me more invaluable skills for my future career.

Looking back to when I enrolled at university, I didn’t have a clear direction of what career I wanted to pursue, but the award and, more so, the people have inspired me to work towards a role in the renewables industry. This summer, I’m looking to source an industrial placement for my 5th year, where I’m eager to learn and be a part of a team of like-minded enthusiasts.

The UHI scholarships are managed by an independent panel at UHI and awarded to students enrolled in STEM courses between 2-4 years in duration. The scholarship fund is now providing support for six students at UHI, representing a minimum investment of £72,000 over the lifetime of the scheme.
